Social media in the twenty first century has expanded rapidly. Since 2003 the social media world has grown to encompass the whole of the globe, and basically every part of it is on a social media website save a few countries such as North Korea, Somalia, and maybe Cuba but soon that might change. Well if you gander at how many people there are on any given social media agency such as Facebook, or Twitter it’s rather fair why your company should be on one of these websites. The statistics of these companies are pretty clear, as of 2011 Twitter boasts around 200 million individual users (of course rounded up) and Facebook had more than 800 million active users. Those numbers alone are pretty impressive.

Here’s the deal with Twitter. 119 million Twitter accounts follow one or more other accounts, 85 million accounts with one or more followers as well. There are 56 million TWitter accounts following no other accounts, and 90 million Twitter accounts with no followers. All of these numbers are as of April 1, 2011. It’s now midway into January of 2012. Those numbers are sure to have changed, possibly advanced over that time period. And though the number of people who have no followers, and or are following nobody might be large is doesn’t speak to the truth of immediacy of following people on Twitter.

Facebook of course boasts a colorful story because Facebook boasts over 800 million active users world wide. That number is growing by the day as well. According to Facebook’s own statistics page more than 50% of active users log onto Facebook in any given day, and the average user has 130 friends. There are more than 900 million objects that people interact with (pages, groups, events and community pages) and the typical user is attached to 80 community pages, groups, and events. As well there are more than 70 individual languages available on the site, and more than 75% of users are outside of the United States.

With those numbers given to you it’s really a no brainer as far as why your business should assent to using social media to outreach to potential buyers. There are hundreds of millions of users on both Twitter and Facebook, and those numbers are more than likely going to grow over the next few years. Fairly soon half of the population of humanity is going to be on a social media website. The future of marketing is changing, and as a company it’s time to change with the times.
